Letter: The anti-tax petition is a futile gesture

(Rick Egan | Tribune file photo) Concerned citizens gather to sign the tax referendum during an event at West High School on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020.

My goal for this week is to find a place to sign the petition against the state tax reform bill. However, I feel fairly certain this will be a futile gesture.

I and thousands of other Utahns signed petitions for referendums on medical marijuana, Medicaid expansion and gerrymandering, as well as a petition to stop this most recent tax bill. And the result of all this political expression of democracy is to be told by the Republican state legislators that we are too ignorant to know what is good for us.

Democracy is dead in Utah until many of the good citizens of this state stop automatically voting Republican, no matter who the candidate or what the issues.
